Plastics have grown increasingly important to the transportation industry since the 1970s when automotive and aeronautic manufacturers realized plastic parts could be used to reduce weight and improve gas efficiency, a fact which helped the auto industry survive the oil crisis at that time. But the usefulness of plastic in transportation doesn't end with reduced weight.
